What Size Rug Do I Need for My Sofa? A Room-by-Room Guide for UAE Homes

In a showroom, choosing a rug for your sofa can seem straightforward until you realize you're debating whether 200x300 cm is large enough or whether your Dubai villa needs a 300x400 cm rug.

The right rug shouldn't be an island under the coffee table. It should bring the sofa, chairs, and table together to one comfortable sitting area.

In the UAE, where living rooms are often large, floors are made of marble, and open-plan designs are prevalent, the rug size for the sofa is as crucial as the colour or pattern.

How to Determine the Size of a Rug for a Sofa?

Start with your seating arrangement, not with the rug.

This is the thumb rule for most living rooms: the rug should be wider than the sofa. If possible, keep the front legs of the sofa and chairs to fit snugly on the rug.

A quick tip: If space permits, leave about 20 to 40 cm of flooring visible around the rug from the wall.

For a medium-sized Dubai apartment, a 200x300 rug for the living room seating arrangement can create a central conversational area without overwhelming the space.

For a larger villa lounge with a generous sectional, step up to 250×350, 300×400, or even 340×450 cm.

These are the main sizes available at AIBA World, along with various shapes, constructions, and materials.

Should All Sofa Legs Be on the Rug?

Not necessarily.

There are 3 practical layouts:

Turn the rug so all of the legs are on it

Ideal for big formal living rooms. The sofa, accent chairs, and coffee table read as a complete set.

Front legs on rug

This is the simplest way to solve the problem for UAE apartments and medium-sized living areas. The sofa stays aligned with the rug, but doesn't need to be too large.

Coffee table only

It’s useful for small spaces but may create a sense of disarrangement in the seating area.

When purchasing a handmade high-quality rug, don't settle for a rug that fits only the sofa. A larger rug can make a big, expensive room seem more purposeful.

What Rug Size Works With a 3-Seater Sofa?

A standard 3-seater will be 200×300 cm, which is usually a good starting point.

It provides you with a long enough sofa to fit the front sofa legs and coffee table in a comfortable position, with a balance to the room.

If your 3-seater is in a spacious open-plan lounge, then you might want to choose something that is 250×350 cm. The extra width allows the sofa to be used to connect with accent chairs or side tables.

For example, let's say Atif owns a 3.2 metre sofa, two lounge chairs, and a big coffee table. A 200×300 rug may feel tight. A 250×350 rug will provide a larger seating area.

AIBA's top-selling collection features several 200×300 cm and 250×350 cm sizes for simpler shopping by size, not by photo.

What Rug Size Works With an L-Shaped Sofa?

L-shaped sofas require more attention as they have two extensions.

If you're looking for a compact sectional, 250×350 cm should be sufficient if you want the front legs of the sofa and coffee table to be placed on the rug.

If you are looking for a large sectional for a spacious Villa, check out the 300×400 rug or a bigger size.

The most important thing is to measure the whole seating area, not only the longest side of the sofa.

A small rug can make furniture look large if your sectional is the centre point of the room. A bigger rug provides the entire ensemble with breathing room.

To inspire you, AIBA's custom flat weave rugs come in a variety of shapes, including rectangular, round, and irregular, so you can choose the rug that perfectly fits your furniture and not the other way around.

What Size Rug Is Best for a Large U-Shaped Sofa?

A large U-shaped sofa typically requires a rug that can "fit inside" or fit comfortably under the sofa.

A good starting point is 300×400 cm for spacious UAE majlis-style lounges, entertainment rooms, and large villa living rooms.

With a generous room and furniture, 340×450 cm can provide a much more polished space.

When you're thinking about buying a dining table, you wouldn't consider one that fits the top but not the chairs. You should make sure that your rug is big enough to fit the entire seating arrangement.

Find Your AIBA World Rug

Once you have the correct measurements, the next choice is the material and the design.

When sustainability is a consideration, research what the best eco-friendly carpets are. To better understand what materials and craftsmanship methods can be used for a more conscious UAE home.

Handmade rugs made from hand-tufted, hand-knotted, loom-knotted, or flat-weave techniques are available at AIBA World, made from New Zealand wool or bamboo silk.

Another factor to consider when choosing a rug for a UAE home is which rug material handles UAE heat and humidity best, and which brands use it. Before making your final selection.

Check out statement rugs like Cove, a bamboo silk rug; Seher, a New Zealand wool rug; or Tasveer, a minimalist bamboo silk rug.

So, if you still have the question, “Will this look good with my sofa?”, then AIBA World has a UAE Home Trial for selected rugs, where you can try out your shortlisted rug in your home before you buy it.

AIBA also has custom rugs for unusually shaped rooms, sofa dimensions, or a designer-led villa project, where you can select the size, material, pattern, palette, and shape. If a traditional rectangular rug doesn't fit the architecture or furniture layout, an irregular carpet can be an excellent choice.

The best rug isn't just the one that fits the floor.

It's the one that makes your sofa and the whole room feel like it belongs.

FAQ’s

What size rug goes under a 3-seater sofa?

A 200x300 cm rug is a good starting point for a standard 3-seater sofa. For larger rooms or accent chairs, 250 x 350 cm is a better size for a balance of the furniture.

What size rug works with an L-shaped sofa?

A small L-shaped sofa will work well with a 250×350 cm rug, and larger sectionals will typically require a rug that is at least 300×400 cm. Don't measure the longest side of the sofa; measure the entire seating space.

Should the sofa sit completely on the rug?

Not always. If you're using a rug in your UAE living room, the front legs of the sofa should be on the rug to give a balanced look. All sofa legs can fit in larger rooms, but in smaller rooms, the coffee table could be placed in the middle of the rug.

Is 200×300 too small for a large living room?

It can be. A rug that is 200×300 cm can appear too small under a big sofa or large villa lounge. For a spacious seating area, 250×350 cm or300×400 cm can result in a more proportionate and connected seating area.

When should I buy 250×350?

Choose 250×350 cm when a 200×300 cm rug feels too tight, but a 300×400 cm rug would dominate the room. It is especially ideal for medium- to large-sized living rooms, 3-seater sofas, and sofas with accent chairs.

When do I need 300×400?

The size of a 300×400 cm rug is ideal for large sectional sofas, wide living rooms, or open-plan UAE interior spaces. It provides more space for the seating arrangement and makes the sofa, coffee table, and chairs feel like a group.

What size works for a Dubai villa?

The right size for a Dubai Villa is based on the room and furniture. 250×350, 300×40,0 or 340×450 cm can work well in larger lounges. Before selecting, measure the space you'll need for sitting and walking.

What size works for a majlis?

If you're looking to decorate a large majlis room, you should consider using a large rug to tie the space together. For larger layouts, 300×400 cm or 340×450 cm can be suitable; the last option is to be determined by the room and seating size.

What size rug goes under a coffee table?

The rug should extend the coffee table by a good length, so that it appears to be part of the seating area. A 200×300 cm rug will work for many medium-sized rooms, and for larger seating areas, a 250×350 or 300×400 cm rug will work.
